As the last exhibition celebrating the end of 2023, Prompt Project is pleased to present a solo exhibition by artist Melody Park titled Willow Charcoal Gray from December 5th to 31st.

‘Color,’ an essential expression element of two-dimensional painting, has been used in the painting genre for a long time in various senses and forms. The bold expression of color blossoming on the two-dimensional surface by the carefree brush stroke of the artist elevates its temperature with deeper density, and along with the thick matière, brings out its unique texture and aesthetic. Artist Melody Park applies this multi-layered charming color to mediums such as drawing stone or powder particles to bring to surface her unique and unrestricted painting.

Each human’s perception of color varies deeply depending on the strength or density of space or light. Park researches the scope of color felt by each individual, and enjoys the physical process of combining and making various materials.

Even if the same color (pigment, color paint) is used, the mood expressed is absolutely different according to the thickness, viscosity, texture and density. I enjoy exploring, expressing and creating my own colors with the various powdered materials such as pigment (powder), color paint (paste) and drawing stones (solid). It is based on my baking sense of analyzing, mixing, and expressing each material’s characteristics.”

-from Melody Park’s artist note-

The artist usually only works when there is natural light because the material’s physical clarity is more sensitively and abundantly captured. She layers the carefree traces of brushstrokes on the canvas and expresses the overlapped light that scatters in all directions and the ovipositional of color. She presents the materialistic experiments which she has enjoyed, while simultaneously reflecting color which shows narrative started from a glimpse of memory and embracing abstraction for aesthetic emotion. Viewers experience the inner senses and reason which accompany her and get a chance to build their own.

In this exhibition, Park introduces Willow Charcoal which she has mixed with oil as her “unique color” for the first time along with her existing mixed materials. Charcoal has been used as a classical basic material for croquis and drawing from the ages ofcave painting before Renaissance until present; however, for artist Melody Park, charcoal is a “tool” to create a unique gray which she has imagined and through this process Willow charcoal gray was born.

The space of Prompt Project, filled with Melody Park’s art works with paint and pigment that retained unique light, approaches the viewers displaying its materialistic spirit with no refrain. Park experiments and creates colors such as Willow charcoal graywhich existed only in her memories, and as a result, the burst of colors unfolding on the surface offers its viewers a chance to freshly absorb her unique aesthetic while also giving them a sense of her concrete and experimental approach toward meaning ofpainting which she intended.

Bismuth Vanadate Yellow

Independent curator: Kyunghyun Kim.

From the 31st of March until the 14th of April, H Contemporary Gallery open Bismuth Vandate Yellow, exhibition of work by Melody Park in which the colours that we encounter in our everyday lives are unravelled through the artist’s unique sense of improvisation. This exhibition presents new works using Bismuth Vanadate Yellow, a yellow oil paint pigment which is cold and cool like the title of the exhibition, but which arouses deep feelings. Melody Park developed an interest in the colours of the varied and fleeting things she encountered in her everyday life over time and observed and researched them without subconsciously going overboard, and she created her works by pictorialising them through her unique senses.

Furthermore, she is expanding her horizons as a young, contemporary, abstract artist by creating her own new experimental shapes in installations which use various objets to expand and connect with two-dimensional works.

In this exhibition, Melody Park focuses on ‘Bismuth Vanadate Yellow’, a representation of the post-modern pigment which is a mix of two metal oxides, bismuth and vanadate. This pigment is being noticed as a post-modern colour which has the advantages of opacity and high chroma and saturation while also addressing the negative environmental and heavy metal issues of Cadmium Yellow, which has been popular with artists since the 19th century.

In this exhibition, the artist intends to show visual dynamicity and presence through tones which are bright and rhythmical yet have depth and weight like the colour of Bismuth Vanadate, as well as to clearly convey her inner world. In particular, this exhibition expresses on the canvas the feeling of standing in the middle of the intersection between the artist’s narrative and an unknown world or of focusing on emotions over rationality in the current situation in which it is impossible to make a decision. In 2020, the artist suffered from depression as a side effect of medication at the same time as the pandemic approached, and in an attempt to change the lack of reality in her lethargic, unconscious daily life wherein her mental crisis was repeated over and over, she searched for bright and lively colours. Working with such strong and highly saturated hues had a key role in helping the artist to work out her depression through aesthetic comfort, as can be sensed in the use of Cadmium Red and Cobalt Blue in her 2020 work, A Journey Which Never Arrives. It is just like the painter Klingsore in Hermann Hesse’s Klingsore’s Last Summer, who spends his last summer in a mentally and internally weakened dramatic state, enduring and transforming his pain by drawing a picture which is calm and dreamlike while also being eccentric and bright, and in which the forms of the current world are freely interpreted through vivid colours such as Cadmium Yellow, Cadmium Red, and Cobalt Violet.

Melody Park’s work delicately and sensitively looks at the colour, texture, and unique properties of the oil paints which are used, and this meaning is intensified and a painting of depth is created through the combination of layers atop the canvas. By using mainly large, flat brushes or parts of her own body, such as her hands, without the help of any tools, unexpected effects of improvised moments are sought after during the process of expression, and they become formed through free artistic expressions. Deep ties are created between the pure but daring, formless brush strokes and the haughty colours, each of which see themself as the protagonist. They each find their place by being properly superimposed on top of one another, and thus Melody Park’s unique identity is revealed on the canvas’ surface.

In this exhibition, Melody Park wants to share the points of her inner self with others by reflecting her spiritual thoughts into the instinctual energy, pleasure, and pure feelings given by highly saturated colours. Furthermore, it is expected that this exhibition will reveal Melody Park’s hope that the value of artworks which involve a wave of inner calm in the audience will be seen and will also reveal the artist’s pure and own particular style of contemporary artistry.

Bismuth vanadate yellow
